Game by barry lyga7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() What limited action there is revolves around Jazz’s penultimate confrontation with his father. Unlike the previous two books, it’s not a whodunit, though the mystery of the Crows and the “Crow King” persists throughout, as does that of Jazz’s traumatic past in the form of his two disturbing, recurring dreams, one of which involves an explicit sexual encounter. There isn’t much real plot to Blood of My Blood. I’ve included some spoilers in my Goodreads review. Note: this review is mostly spoiler-free. Jazz still struggles with the demons of his past and still wonders if he is, indeed, doomed to follow in his father’s murderous footsteps, but he is also determined to rescue his mother, and he will stop at nothing to do so. After Billy ironically saves his life in New York, Jazz pursues him despite being seriously injured as well as an NYPD suspect. In this conclusion to the trilogy that began with I Hunt Killers, Jasper Dent discovers that his long-lost mother–whom he feared he was forced to kill as a child–is alive and in the the clutches of his father, the infamous and recently-escaped serial killer Billy Dent. ![]()

Little blue envelope7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() She says “…she had to convince her parents of the same thing. This whole scene is glossed over in the book, though. I just found this to be extremely far-fetched, especially since Ginny’s mom found her sister to be a little crazy (not the exact words used, but close enough sentiment) and encouraged Ginny while she was growing up to NOT be like her aunt. But as a parent, I cannot imagine EVER letting my teenage daughter travel internationally by herself with no way to contact me if she needed help. Ginny is 17 and instructed to leave the country by herself with no extra money and no means of electronic communication with anyone in the states. From there, she is to open one envelope at a time, and only when she is instructed to by the previous note.Īs interesting as this concept seemed, it also kind of lost me as a parent. Ginny receives a letter from her dead aunt telling her to pack one backpack, travel to New York to pick up a package, and to fly to London. ![]() I felt like 13 Little Blue Envelopes really started off at a good pace. Of course, I then proceeded to procrastinate on reading it for a while, but I did finally pick it up. I’ve seen 13 Little Blue Envelopes a few times around the blogosphere, so when I was browsing my library and saw it, I decided to pick it up. ![]()

A curious beginning book7/8/2023 ![]() These two! Always bickering and flirting, and, of course, trying to solve a murder while also curating a natural history museum, as one does. ![]() Officially known as the Honourable Revelstoke Templeton-Vane, third son of the sixth Viscount Templeton-Vane, Stoker is a surly, handsome naturalist with his own troubled past and a surprising (and endearing) feminist streak. Through a series of misadventures - including an attack at her home during her aunt’s funeral… how rude! - she finds herself in the company of Stoker. She’s a lepidopterist - that’s a butterfly hunter - with an affinity for adventure, and she’s armed with a tongue that’s as finely honed as the hatpin she wields as a weapon. Our intrepid heroine Veronica Speedwell (secret and semi-legitimate daughter of the Prince of Wales) is a handful and a half. ![]()

The future of history masha gessen7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Indeed, Russia continues to dominate the headlines the specter of its meddling in the 2016 presidential elections lingers, ever threatening to tip us into a frosty era in which "an information war is waged against Western democracy as a concept and a reality."īut Western democracy, which is itself embattled in America, is not exactly Gessen's main focus - rather it is democracy unrealized and undesired in post-Communist Russia it is its eventual, unconscionable death. No doubt, Gessen's "The Future Is History," arrives at an opportune time - a time, she writes, when Russia has "reclaimed the role of evil and existentialist threat in America." ![]() Even the subtitle, "How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia," sends an urgent, alarming message to the world. Its cover - a black-and-white photograph of a woman sitting inside what appears to be a booth, her face partly obscured by an intercom - gives off a foreboding air. Masha Gessen's latest book about modern-day Russia, which comes in at more than 500 pages, is unapologetically loud, a protest against complacency. ![]()

![]() ![]() Laura Lee and I left some messages of love and peace to share with the community. They had a nice table display which was writable. Tonight’s show still included the sale of wine and beer from the second level which was a pleasant surprise. The building has been a historical landmark (and not just because most of its’ patrons are historical landmarks), the building operates with funding provided in part from The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through appropriation by the Rhode Island General assembly, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and private funders. The reconstruction has been paid for by fundraising and grants from the town and it’s residents. However, the first floor and below is stripped down to the stud walls as it is quickly becoming a town restaurant and pub with some antique architecture on display!
